How to Use Excel Page Breaks

Introduction

In Excel you can use page breaks as dividers to split up a worksheet into separate print pages. The article will demonstrate how to use Excel's page break, such as editing, removing, and moving.

Microsoft Excel applies automatic page breaks depending on the size of the sheet, the margin, the parameters, the scale choices and the positions of a manual page break. We can take more control of our worksheets if we understand how to use manual page breaks.

How to insert a page break in Excel

In the Normal view in Excel, you can construct manual page breaks, but the Page Break Preview view allows you to see information such as the difference between being an automatic page break or a manual page break.

Microsoft Excel uses a dotted line to indicate an automatic page break. A straight line signifies a manual page break.

To demonstrate how does the page break works, follow the step by step example shown below:

Step 1: Open the file you want to print out.
Step 2: On ribbon, click the View tab then, select the Page Break Preview categorized on the workbook views group.

Step 3: The two types of Page Break are:

  • Vertical Page Break - Choose the row under where the break would be.
  • Horizontal Page Break - Choose the column on the right side of where the break would be.

Step 4: Go to Page Layout tab then, click the Breaks categorized on Page Setup group. Select the Insert Page Break under the drop down list of Breaks.

Edit the page breaks has three options:

To move the page break

To move, select the Page Break you want then, drag it to the other place to move a specific page break in your worksheet.

You could move also the automatic page breaks into manual page breaks

** To delete the page break**

To delete the page break, follow the given steps:

  • Click the row below or the column to the right of the page break you would like to delete.
  • Go to the Page Layout tab.
  • On the Page Setup group, click the Breaks then select Remove Page Break option.

To remove manual page break

To delete all the manual page break, follow the given steps below:

  • Go to the Page Layout tab.
  • Select the Breaks on the Page Setup group then, click Reset All Page Breaks option.

Click on Breaks, Reset All Page Breaks, to remove all manual page breaks. You cannot automatically remove page breaks.
